Sinai Temple, Springfield, MA, announces an upcoming Scholar In Residence Weekend, March 29-30, with Cantor Ellen Dreskin (, an innovative worship leader in the liberal Jewish movement. The weekend, titled “Worship with the Wires Exposed: A Closer Look at the Words, Music, and Relevance of Jewish Communal Prayer,” includes study, prayer, music, meals, and family activities.

Schedule of events:

March 29
6:00pm, Middle Eastern dinner from Saray Restaurant; $10 suggested donation;
7:00pm, Innovative Shabbat Service, filled with new music and new insights

March 30
9:00am, “What do our prayers tell us about who we are and why we are here?”
11:00am, Shabbat brunch
5:00pm, All ages “Interactive Havdallah: Stories and Songs for Shabbat and the Week Ahead.” preceded by pizza dinner; $5 suggested donation

Dreskin’s expertise extends from music to synagogue transformation, from experiential education to enlivened liturgy and mysticism. She is a synagogue consultant and clergy coach in the areas of liturgical innovation, personal prayer practice, and communal worship skills. Ellen has worked as a scholar-in-residence at dozens of congregations across the country, and has served as both Cantor and Educator at congregations in Ohio and New York. She regularly serves on the Faculty of Institutes, Camps, and Conferences, including HUC-JIR, Hava Nashira, URJ Biennial, URJ Kutz Camp Leadership Academy, and the JCCA’s SCLI Fellows’ Program. Ellen was ordained by HUC-JIR in 1986, and has a Master’s Degree in Jewish Communal Service from Brandeis University.
