Please join us on Sunday, October 28 at Beit Ahavah for a compelling discussion and author appearance with Libby Garland, author of the novel "After They Closed the Gates: Jewish Illegal Immigration to America".

Libby Garland will lead the discussion at 4 p.m. and will be taking questions as we work through this important issue as a community.

"In After They Closed the Gates, Libby Garland tells the untold stories of the Jewish migrants and smugglers involved in that underworld, showing how such stories contributed to growing national anxieties about illegal immigration. Garland also helps us understand how Jews were linked to, and then unlinked from, the specter of illegal immigration. By tracing this complex history, Garland offers compelling insights into the contingent nature of citizenship, belonging, and Americanness."

For many Jews this personal and collective history compels us to stand in solidarity with undocumented immigrants today who face injustice and deportation. For all of us, this piece of history stands out as one of many repeated and on going examples of racialized, restrictionist, discriminatory immigration policies that demand our engagement. Together we have the opportunity to deepen our understanding of what connects our history to our actions today. Generously funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.

Held at 130 Pine Street, Florence. Please contact us at (413) 587-3770 for questions or more information. We look forward to seeing you!
