The Jewish Federation Connecting with Community presents "The Life and Legacy of Dr. Janusz Korczak."

Dr. Janusz Korczak (pen name of Henryk Goldszmit 1879-1642) pediatrician, educator, writer, and humanitarian is well known all over the world for his innovative work with Polish and Jewish orphans at two orphanages in Warsaw from 1912-1942.

Mariola Strahlberg, founder and executive director of Janusz Korczak Association of the USA, will present an informative and timely talk. On August 5, 1942, Dr. Korczak was taken to the Treblinka death camp, together with 192 orphans and staff of 9, and disappeared. never to be seen again. The Israelis revere Janusz Korczak as one of the 36 Just Men whose pure souls, according to the ancient Jewish tradition, make the world's salvation possible, and UNESCO declared 1978-79 the Year of Korczak, to coincide with the Year of the Child and the centenary of his birth.

This free program is part of the Federation’s Connecting With Community Series and will be followed by a kosher hot lunch. Lunch is a $2 suggested donation for adults over 60 years of age or $7 for all others. Advance reservations are required for lunch and can be made by calling (413) 442-2200 before 9 a.m. on the day of the program.
