An introduction to Islam for those who would
like to have a deeper understanding of the core
beliefs and practices of Islam (and the many
similarities between Judaism and Islam) while
hearing about differences between Sunni, Shia
and Sufi Muslims. Our learning together will
include listening to some of Prof. John Esposito’s
video presentations from the Great Courses class
on Islam; engaging with invited local Muslim
community leaders to discuss personal expressions of Muslim piety, interfaith work and dealing with contemporary political realities; visiting a local mosque for evening prayer; and discussion of prayer practices, as well as lifecycle practices — especially marriage, death, and burial. We will also share a Ramadan iftar meal together.
Rabbi Devorah Jacobson has been Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Life at JGS Lifecare in Longmeadow since 2001. She has served on the faculty of Melton Adult Jewish Education Programs in Springfield and Florence for over ten years. In 2016, she was named one of America’s Most Inspiring Rabbis by The Forward and lauded for her work in helping seniors and their families spiritually during difficult transitions of aging.
Registration required.
A minimum of eleven participants is needed for the course to run. A course fee of $130 per student has been set by the instructor; the fee includes a copy of the Qur’an.
