On the 100th anniversary of its signing most Jews look on the Balfour Declaration as a positive event in their march towards a Jewish state but know little else about it. This lecture will to elucidate the history of the signing of the Declaration and bring its importance in our history to the forefront.
In 1917 the Zionist movement represented only a minority of Jews. The Balfour Declaration became the seminal document of the Zionist enterprise. It is possible that the declaration brought forth a Jewish state a generation earlier than otherwise possible. Although the British government probably came to regret it's decision to support the "establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people," and often refused to "use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object," this was a victory for the Zionist movement and gave a wold power's green light for Jews to make alyah to Israel.
