One of the most beloved and widely-consulted books of the rabbinic tradition is a slender volume of the Talmud known as Pirkei Avot, generally translated as “The Ethics of the Fathers.” The five-chapter work is composed of an assortment of wise and pithy sayings, given in the name of a succession of Mishnaic sages, aphorisms that have provided inspiration to numerous generations of Jews, and even found cache in the wider world.

This four-session course with Rabbi Weiner will provide a brief introduction to the content and setting of this celebrated collection. We will examine the biographies of some of its main characters in historical context, study the relationship of the text to the larger structure of the rabbinic corpus, and, of course, delve into the words of wisdom themselves, determining the extent to which they still speak to us today.

A minimum of seven participants is needed for the course to run. Suggested contribution: $54
